Test and answers on the Anthology Pieces

You've been given these handouts in lessons, but in case you've lost them, here they are:

The diagram to help with revising Anthology Pieces

Use this diagram to help with your revision.
You should be able to download it.

  1. Make sure you know the five techniques for each article (see post above this one on the test for this, and for possible answers). Each of these goes on a 'technique' box on the sheet.
  2. For each technique, find up to four quotations you would use to demonstrate this technique. Put these in the relevant box on the diagram.
  3. Fill in the impact box for each technique: you may have more than one impact per technique.
  4. Work out a mnemonic for each anthology piece to help you learn the techniques.
  5. Using a non-annotated anthology piece (print out fresh ones using the anthology document below), re-annotate the techniques on to it, using a different colour for each technique. Start off by doing this with your notes and annotated copy in front of you.
  6. Once you feel you know the piece well, re-annotate a fresh copy of it without any notes to help you.
Only now should you start to approach exam questions. Use the links below to access these.

Revision Tasks on Anthology Material

Don't be intimidated by the mass of stuff here! Start your revision by revising the notes you currently have on the pieces in the anthology BEFORE consulting any of this. These documents recap some of the techniques we have discussed on each piece.

At the end of each pdf there are (confusingly) some extra Section A (final question only) and Section C practice questions; I'd take these off the pdfs, but I don't have the software to do that at home!

Past Questions

As with section A, past questions can be found on a couple of Edexcel websites, here and here; click 'Question Paper'. You need to look at 'Paper 1'; we don't do 'Paper 2' as we've done coursework instead.

Some notes on the anthology pieces.

These websites are no substitute for the notes we have made in class (and they aren't written by the UCS English Department), but you might find them useful:

Close Analysis of Anthology Pieces (click 'Lang Exam' on the left hand side and then scroll down to 'Tracked Anthology Extracts'). On this website you can also find past questions too.
